President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has signed into law the national budget for the fiscal period beginning July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010 in the amount of USD$371,908,799 (three-hundred seventy-one million, nine-hundred eight thousand, seven-hundred & ninety-nine United States Dollars).

Receiving the budget from members of the Senate and House Executive Committees at a brief ceremony Friday at the Foreign Ministry, President Johnson Sirleaf commended Finance Minister Augustine Ngafuan and the budget committee for the exercise leading to the final approval of the budget, including the holding of numerous hearings during the process.

According to an Executive Mansion release, the President commended the Ways and Means Committee of both the Senate and House for their professionalism and the timeliness which characterized the budgetary process. “This is a record as far as the passage is concerned and shows the level of efficiency and commitment,” the Liberian leader observed.

The President also thanked the National Legislature for reaching a compromise regarding the County Development Funds. The President frowned on the slowness in completing development projects, noting that the processes have not served the Liberian people well. She expressed hope that with the passage of the 2009/10 National Budget, meetings will be held for the development projects across the country to be decided.

Present at the ceremony were Senate Executive Committee Chairman and Gbarpolu County Senator Daniel Naatehn, Grand Bassa County Senator Gbezhongar Findley; Bomi County Representative Haja Fata Siryon; Nimba County Representative Nohn Kidau; Lofa County Representative Malian Jalebah; Finance Minister Augustine Ngafuan; and Minister of State for Economic and Legal Affairs, Morris Saytumah.
