The Managing Editor of The FORUM newspaper, Augustus Fallah is
calling on the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) Secretary General Alphonso Zeon
to desist from mischievous activities at the union.
Speaking at a news briefing yesterday in Monrovia, Mr. Fallah who is also
Founder/Director of the Institute for Media Development and Dignity (IMEDD)
said the media is a profession that should be free of vices that undermine
the decency of a vibrant society.
Reacting to a story in the Monday, 12 June 2006 edition of the News newspaper
which linked PUL President, George Barpeen attributed to the union’s
Secretary General , he ( Zoen) cleverly linked his boss to the scam only to
taint his character because of the pending elections.
On the issue of the US800.00 regarding Mr. Hilary Mentoe, Mr. Fallah said
at an emergency meeting prior to the departure of Mrs. Elizabeth Hoff, then
president of the union, the entire body including Mr. Zeon got the report
which was solely in the preview of Mr. Mentoe who took responsibility of payment
for the fund in question.
“Since then, Mr. Mentoe under a promissory document dated November 15,
2005 is underwriting the cost through the union which Mr. Zeon is aware”.
The News newspaper reported in its Monday 12 June 2006 edition a story linking
Mr. Barpeen to a US800 scam at the Press Union of Liberia.
Mr. Fallah therefore urged Mr. Zeon and all those behind this scheme to rather
strive for the vibrancy and dignity of the Liberian media and graduate from
those behaviors that tend to divide the media, adding, “already, there
is a brain drain in the media, we need people with vision to move the media
on par with others in and out of the region”.
