The ICGL in a release said it is closely monitoring developments and is confident the National Elections Commission (NEC) will continue to conduct its work in a transparent and impartial manner. The group said that at the request of the National Transitional Government of Liberia and NEC, UNMIL has taken measure to ensure protection of the NEC premises.
This, according to a release, is to ensure the sanctity of the electoral process and to prevent any interference with the work of the commission, saying, “These measures will not in any way curtail the right to peaceful protest, which is guaranteed under the law.”
The ICGL said it is aware of increased concern among many Liberian citizens regarding security during the elections campaign period. The group said it has learnt of a letter addressed to the NEC containing what appeared to be threats to disrupt the electoral process over the issue of approval of candidates.
The international group also states that it is aware of an unsuccessful attempt to destroy property belonging to a senior NEC official, and of the threats made against his person and the person of other NEC commissioners.
Meanwhile, the ICGL therefore calls upon all Liberians, including candidates for office, their supporters and other political actors to exercise restraint and make sure that the elections are conducted in a free, fair and peaceful manner.
