Two presidential aspirants, Dr. Togba Nah-Tipoteh of the ADP and Prof,
Alhaji G.V. Kromah of ALCOP, have expressed serious concern over the statement
made by a senior personnel of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL)
that they cannot guarantee security in the country; writes, Josiah S. Hallie.
The two presidential aspirants who did not disclose the name of the UNMIL
Personnel said, it was worrisome for the body responsible for handling security
the country to come UP at this eleventh hour of electioneering to raise
security concern.
According to them, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special
Representative to Liberia Alan Doss recently assured the Liberians that
their security would be guaranteed during the pending election process.
Messrs Tipoteh and Kromah who were recently speaking on Star Radio during
the presidential debate program, called for another round table conference
with UNMIL political and military personnel along with political party heads
to thrash out what they termed a “serious security matter, before
elections.
At the same time, three international organizations responsible for monitoring
election in the country have also expressed similar security concern.
The three, NDI, IRI and the Carter Center said they are sensing danger ahead of the county in the absence of complete RR components of the DDRR Program.
They are therefore calling on the international community to provide the
shortfall of approximately 18 million United States dollar needed to complete
the entire process of rehabilitating the ex-combatants.
The issue of lack of complete rehabilitation and reintegration of former
fighters in the Liberian conflict has been identified by the ICGL as the
main cause of perpetual chaos in the country.
