The Chinese Engineering Battalion of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL), is currently reconditioning roads and bridges in southeastern Liberia.
According to our correspondent, who just visited the area, the project has already commenced; with the linking of Nimba and parts of Rivercess Counties. The Chinese UNMIL peacekeepers are said to be working together with local people in the area. Other major routes being reconditioned by UNMIL include the major highway linking River Gee and Maryland Counties. For instance, the River Gee Bridge, which was originally built with planks, is now taking a new outlook with steel plastic and is expected to be complete within two weeks.
Meanwhile, life is said to be returning to normalcy in the Southeastern counties of River Gee, Maryland and Grand Kru as the Senegalese peacekeepers have taken over the security in the area from MODEL fighters.
According to FORUM correspondent, the cities of Harper and Pleebo in Maryland County that used to be deserted, have become jam-packed with the return of thousands of people who fled to Ivory Coast due to war. Foreigners are also said to be coming along.
The residents told our correspondent that the massive return of Liberians to Harper has caused the inflation to hit the city with prices of essential commodities surging. For instance, a bag of rice is sold for L$1500, a plastic bag of coal cost about L$10, while the transportation fare from Harper to Monrovia is L$1500 per passenger without load.
