PRESS STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Over the weekend, the Grand Gedeh Association in the Americas received news of the assassination of General Alfred Glay, former Aide Camp to President Samuel Doe.

The Accra Mail, a Ghanaian newspaper, reported in its April 29, 2002 edition that Gen. Glay was assassinated by men believed to be loyal and in the pay of the Liberian Government. According to the paper, the assassins, now in police custody in Ghana, are Liberians who arrived in Ghana only a few days before the incident. They allegedly drove a vehicle with a Liberian license plate in which they lured Gen. Glay to his death.

The Liberians being investigated by the Ghanaian police for the assassination of General Glay are Charles Wrotee and Christopher Wesseh, both former fighters of Taylor’s NPFL and now tied to President Taylor’s notorious ATU security.

The assassination of General Glay leaves many Grand Gedeans to wonder if there is not a plan to liquidate prominent citizens of Grand Gedeh County. It can be recalled that Messrs Shad Kaydea and Philip Davis, two prominent citizens of Grand Gedeh County, also died in the Ivory Coast under circumstances similar to those of General Glay’s death. And recently, when President Taylor released the remaining Grand Gedeans who were imprisoned after the Camp Johnson Road massacred, he made it clear that he held them in prison not because he was convinced they committed a crime, but that he was afraid they would oppose him.

The Grand Gedeh Association in the Americas strongly condemns the assassination of General Glay and the persecution of the people of Grand Gedeh County. We wish to let those who are responsible for this recent wicked act know that their attempt to eliminate all prominent Grand Gedeans will not succeed and that they will ultimately bear the consequences of their wickedness.

The assassination of General Glay should be a concern to all Liberians because this might be part of a plan not only to liquidate prominent Grand Gedeans, but all exile oppositions. That is why the Grand Gedeh Association in the Americas is now calling on all Liberians, both at home in Liberian and abroad, to condemn the assassination of General Glay in the strongest possible terms. We must act collectively now to defeat this new evil.

The Grand Gedeh Association in the Americas wishes to thank the Ghanaian government for the swift manner in which the alleged assassins of General Glay were apprehended. It is our hope that justice will be done once the investigations are concluded, and results of the investigation would be made public. In the meantime, we call on all Grand Gedeans to remain calm as the Ghanaian authorities handle the situation.
