Two Liberian Students Top West African Examinations

Finally, the Monrovia National Office of the West African Examinations Council
(WAEC), has released the names of students who made exceptional marks by topping
the 2001/2002 Liberia Senior High School Certificate examinations.
According to Mr. Eli Momolu Lumei, head of WAEC Monrovia National Office,
the two students are Master Charles D. Asumana from the Lott Carey Baptist
Mission School in Brewerville, as the Dux; and Miss Paula F. Fares from the
St. Teresa’s Convent on Randall Street, as the runner-up. Over 12,000
12th Graders sat for the 2001/2002 national exams.
Mr. Lumei told The INQUIRER that the two students who topped the 2001/2002
Examinations will be honored for their exceptional and outstanding academic
performance in the exams. The honoring program takes place on Thursday at
the end of the 27th Annual Council Meeting.
He said the occasion, which was earlier scheduled, was postponed to December
2003 due to prevailing situation in the country. The "Certificates of
Distinction" will be presented to the two students in recognition and
appreciation of their academic achievement in the exams", Mr. Lumei added.
Also, two officials of the WAEC Monrovia National Office will be honored for
their long service and dedication to duty. They are Messrs Eli M. Lumei and
Harrison Kokulo.
Meanwhile, the WAEC Monrovia National Office has commenced its Year End Annual
Council Meeting, where major decisions on issues relative to the growth and
development of the Council will be taken.
The meeting to be held at the Parish Hall of the St. Stephen’s Episcopal
Church on 10th Street in Sinkor, will officially open on Monday and end on
Thursday, with the Council reaching major decisions.
The Registrar of the Council and head of Secretariat, Mr. Matthew P. Ndure
who is based in the headquarters in Accra, Ghana, is expected in the country
for this year’s meeting.
The Year End Meetings are regularly held at the end of each year in WAEC member
countries including the Gambia, Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone and Liberia.
It is during this annual meeting that the various committees make their report
to council, which is the highest decision making body of WAEC.
The various committees include the Liberia National Committee, Liberia Administrative
and Finance Committees. Other committees are the Liberia Aptitude Test and
Examinations and the Liberia Final Awards Committees, among others.
The Liberia National committee is the highest decision making committee and
that decisions taken by that committee go to the Council or be implemented
by the head offices of member countries.
According to Mr. Eli M. Lumei, the head of WAEC Monrovia National Office,
it is during this time of the year that member countries make their Annual
report to the various committees for appropriate action.
