The Chairman of the National Transitional Government of Liberia (NTGL),
C. Gyude Bryant has approved a four-court recommendation of a committee
constituted recently to probe into complaints levied against the University
of Liberia President, Dr. Ben Roberts.
The Committee headed by Cabinet Director, Soko V. Sackor among other things
recommended that the UL accounts at various banks be monitored and controlled
by the Minister of Education and Ex-officio of the University of Liberia
to avoid over excessive spending.
The committee also recommended that the visitor of the UL and Chairman of
the NTGL, C. Gyude Bryant speedily reconstitute the Board of Trustees of
the University of Liberia.
The 4-man committee further recommended that January 2004 should commence
the process leading to the reopening of the university and preferably classes
should commence in March 2004.
It can be recalled that following numerous complaints against the president
of the University of Liberia, Dr. Ben A. Roberts, by staff of the nation’s
highest institution of learning, the Chairman of the NTGL, constituted a
committee headed by Cabinet Director Soko V. Sackor to probe authorities
at the University of Liberia.
Other members of the committee included Sis. Laurene Browne of the Catholic
Secretariat, Thomas Brima of CEDE, Atty. Vivian Cherue and Mr. William Harris
of CREDO.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the NTGL has requested the National Transitional
Legislative Assembly and the Alumni Association of the University of Liberia
to forward to his office the names of their nominees for subsequent appointment
to the University of Liberia Board of Trustees.
