Two American pro-democracy institutions based in the country, the International Republican Institute (IRI) and the National Democratic Institute (NDI), will today host the first, in a series of roundtables between Liberian civil society organizations and registered political parties.
An IRI/NDI release said the theme of this roundtable is, “Roles and Responsibilities of CSOs and RPPs In the Success of the 2005 Elections” , and is expected to take place at the Monrovia YMCA from 10:00a.m. to 2:00p.m. The forum is open to the public. According to a release, this initial interaction between CSOs and RPPs will serve as the basis for future roundtables, each addressing a specific. Led by a moderator, the overall purpose of CSO/RPP Roundtables is to provide a pubic forum where an intellectual exchange of ideas and an educational debate on issues will take place.
As a mechanism to control the discussions and in order to make this roundtable a manageable and effective discourse, a team of five representatives will make up the RPP panel, which, in-turn will interact with a five-member panel representing CSOs, the release said.
IRI/L and NDI/L further consider these exercises to be of immeasurable importance to fostering a responsible democratic environment in Liberia. Through these roundtables, IRI and NDI aim to bolster their respective institutions’ commitment toward building the capacities of both CSOs and RPP in Liberia.
IRI/L and NDI/L envisage these roundtables as a stimulant for constructive dialogue between the various stakeholders in Liberia’s forthcoming elections and the democratic process. IRI and NDI further anticipate that these roundtables will help bridge the communication gap existing between RPPs and CSOs and serve as a valuable medium for constructive and civil discussion on issues affecting Liberia. IRI and NDI anticipate that the spirited exchange of ideas and a healthy debate emerging from these events will be of great value to observers and the general public.
