As the date for the pending Presidential and General Elections in the country draws nearer, four of Liberia’s 18 registered political parties have agreed to cooperate in forging a united front and in essence field a single slate of candidates.
The Liberia Action Party (LAP), the Liberia Unification Party (LUP), the Unity Party (UP), and the Free Democratic Party of Liberia (FDP), said their decision to field a single slate of candidates in the upcoming elections is in response to the overwhelming demand of the Liberian people to reduce the number of aspirants during the elections.
The parties asserted in their joint press statement that in an environment of continued conflict, divisible tribal tendencies, pervasive poverty, brutal armed incursions and widespread illiteracy, the multiplicity of options sharpens tribal divides, undermines social cohesiveness, compromises political stability and confuses voters.
