Contrary to claims in some quarters that the NTGL Chairman Charles Gyude
Bryant’s mission to the UN headquarters to meet with the Security
Council relative to the lifting of the sanctions on the country was unsuccessful,
the transitional government head says the response was positive as a UN
Mission is due in Liberia within 90 days; as Patrick K. Wrokpoh reports
Chairman Bryant said all 15 members of the Security Council "responded
well" when he presented Liberia’s position on the need to lifting
the sanction on the country.
Speaking at the First United Methodist Church on Ashmun Street where a special
service was being held for the safe arrival yesterday of his delegation
back home from the United States, Chairman Bryant expressed the hope that
in the not too distant future, the country will get good news about the
sanctions being lifted.
He said the UN mission that is expected in the country will come to assess
the situation for the lifting of the sanction especially as it relates to
how resources from the country’s timber and diamond industries are
used for the development of the nation among others.
Chairman Bryant whose visit to the United States was the second since he
became head of State, added that while in the United States, he also met
with officials of the United States government as well as those who have
expressed interest to assist the country.
Although, the NTGL Chairman did not mention the name of any one or group
that he met with while away, he told the congregation that all of those
he met assured him of making good their support and pledges to the nation.
"I hope the support promised us will come so that we can turn our country
around" he added.
Earlier in his sermon, the Associate and Acting Pastor of the First United
Methodist Church, Rev. George K. Weagba stressed the need for righteousness
to take precedent in the Liberian society.
He said, righteousness benefits a nation and brings blessing upon it. Rev
Weagba added that a nation that will do away with righteousness, will definitely
live in sin as this will have adverse effect on the nation.
Rev. Weagba used the occasion to call on the NTGL to address the social
needs of the nation. The Methodist prelate also urged the NTGL Chairman
to uphold his integrity and play his role well as head of the nation by
following and supporting the virtues of righteousness. He further called
on the NTGL Chairman to be very mindful of some of his close associates
as he steers the affairs of the nation stressing " some of them may
try to mislead you and so, you have to uphold your integrity."
The program was attended by government officials, members of the cleric,
among others.
