U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Office Donates to UL

The US Embassy’s Public Affairs Office yesterday donated a consignment of assorted books and furniture to the University of Liberia(UL).

The gesture of the donation that included 6 boxes of carpet tiles, 3 boxes of assorted books, 2 file cabinets, 3 engineering books for Library, 1 set of executive desk and 17 boxes of Accounting books, accordingly, was the donor’s way of identifying with the plight of the UL.

Making the donation on the main campus of the University of Liberia, the Director of the Public Affairs Office, Ms. Christina Porche said a little over two years ago when her father retired from the engineering field in the United States, she was wondering how she and her family could become a help to the university community in Liberia.

Ms. Porche said thereafter, she began to gather some of the books used by her father along with other books to be subsequently turned over to the UL to alleviate the problem about the lack of books at the institution.

She assured the family of the University of Liberia of her tireless efforts in working assiduously to help the institution achieve its goals and objectives, adding "presently, I’m serving as a bridge between the university and those who are residing outside of Liberia and willing to help the school. Individuals wishing to assist this institution are always in contact with my office. All of these contacts are geared towards making the university a school that people can depend on for studies.

"The Office of Public Affairs at the U.S Embassy is looking at strategic areas in which we can complement your work in realizing your objectives. We are working on plans to see how best instructors of this university wanting to further the education can do same through an exchange program. The presentation of these books and furniture is not the last, you will continue to us here, and you will continue to receive more new books from us. This gesture is in furtherance of our friendship. As you know, the Transitional Initiative fixed the roof of your library." Ms. Porche concluded.

Receiving the items, the acting president of the UL, Dr. Joseph Kollie lauded Ms. Porche and her staff for the gesture, noting that the university family was not surprise because the U.S, Public Affairs boss has made similar donation to the Mass communication Department upon her arrival in the country to take up her assignment.

Dr. Kollie said the institution is in need of more support, and he was using the occasion to appeal to individuals and institutions of goodwill to emulate the good gesture of the Ms. Porche and her staff, describing her as "truly a friend in partner and progress".
