We, the International Volunteer Peacekeepers for Liberia (IVPKL) have organized a press conference for the day of Monday, 28 July 2003 at 11 AM. Members of the International Volunteer Peacekeepers for Liberia will gather at the James Allen Center, Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, to discuss the current situation in Liberia and the need for the United States’ government to send peacekeepers to Liberia.

Fighting in Liberia has intensified in recent months, and at this point is unimaginably horrible. Since the 1980s thousands of people have been wounded, killed and displaced due to civil war. People in this area are in constant danger and suffering.

Recently, Mr. Kofi Annan and other organizations to help end the suffering and violence in Liberia have pressured President Bush and his administration, but the US government remains reluctant, despite the affinity the Liberian people have for the United States and the strong historical ties shared by our two countries. We feel that this is inconsistent with the United State’s commitment to peace and stability in the world. It is also inhumane.

Despite our government’s reluctance to help the Liberian people, the IVPKL is committed to making a difference in Liberia. We are deploying volunteers to Africa (Liberia) to help bolster the efforts of West African peacekeepers. The IVPKL will speak of its goals in aiding the peacekeeping effort and give an overview of the peacekeeping effort on a whole.

Until our brothers and sisters worldwide are free, we cannot completely enjoy our freedom. Until our brothers and sisters worldwide are living in peace, we cannot completely enjoy our peace.
